Sports Infrastructure for Tomorrow

These pressures are not unique to Stonnington. They are shared by councils across inner Melbourne, which is why partnerships will be essential to finding solutions that go beyond what Council can deliver alone.

The evidence

To inform the Sports Infrastructure Plan (SIP), we completed a comprehensive assessment of sports infrastructure network covering the number, distribution, condition and functionality of Council's sports facilities, resident population forecasts, current participation patterns, and broader trends shaping the future of sport. Our Fair Access Policy 2024-2027 guided this work, committing us to equitable access to facilities and playing time for people of all genders, ages, abilities and backgrounds.

This work builds on more than 500 contributions from community members, sporting clubs and stakeholders gathered through the Active Stonnington engagement program in 2025, as well as insights from sports lighting upgrades and the Domestic Animal Management Plan. That feedback directly informed the evidence base and the draft Sports Infrastructure Plan now open for community feedback. This exhibition invites you to build on that earlier work and help shape the final Plan.

  • What you told us

    • Experience of our facilities varies widely
    • Safe, inclusive and accessible design matters
    • Capacity and access are ongoing challenges
    • Balancing uses is important
    • Lighting plays an important role in safety and recreation
    • Outdated infrastructure places a greater burden on clubs and volunteers

Our priorities

Our aim is a sports infrastructure network that supports more people to participate, more often, in more ways. To get there, this Plan is built around three connected priorities that work together.

Smarter Management is the foundation, making the best use of what we already have and how we plan for the future. Better Facilities builds on this by prioritising improvement and renewals to address the fair access deficits. More Places to Play is the most ambitious response, pursue opportunities to create additional capacity for a growing community and innovation partnerships and regional access to existing facilities.

What you can shape

What you can shape
  • Which of the three priorities matters most to you and your community.
  • The types of improvements that should be highlighted within each priority.
  • What is missing?
  • Have we prioritised individual projects accordingly?
What won't change
  • The evidence-base assessment of sports infrastructure network.
  • Land availability - Stonnington is a densely developed inner-city municipality with limited space for new facilities.
  • Council's overall budget and financial constraints.
