Why lower speeds matter
Learn more about the evidence behind Stonnington's 30km/h Road Safety Improvement Program Trials.
Streets in Stonnington are shared by everyone — children walking to school, older residents crossing the road, people riding, drivers and visitors. But not all of our streets feel safe for everyone who uses them.
From October 2026 to April 2028, Council is trialling 30km/h speed limits across a number of local streets in Stonnington. The trials are about more than reducing crashes, they're about making streets feel safer, supporting people to walk and ride more, and creating more pleasant, connected neighbourhoods.
The trials are part of Council's broader Road Safety Improvement Program and build on community feedback, crash data, our Road Safety Strategy, and known road safety hotspots.

About the trials
Trials will go for 18-months. During this time we'll be collecting data, monitoring outcomes and seeking community feedback at key stages. No permanent decisions will be made until the trials are complete and fully assessed.

These locations were identified using a combination of traffic and safety data, on-site observations and previous community feedback. They represent areas where safety concerns have been raised or where improvements may have the greatest impact.

What's changing
Speed limits on a number of local streets are being reduced from 40km/h to 30km/h for the duration of the trial. Changes include new signage and treatments on roads to support the lower speed limit.
A 30km/h street looks and feels different, traffic moves more slowly and predictably, it's easier and safer to cross the road, and the street feels calmer for everyone using it, whether you're driving, walking or riding.

We want to hear from anyone who uses the trial locations. This pre-trial survey is open from 24 August to 27 September 2026 and captures your experience before speed limits change in October 2026, we'll use it as a baseline to understand what changes over the course of the trial.

What happens next?
Half-way through the trial and again at the end of the 18 months, we'll be in touch to hear about your experience using these streets. The information we gather from the community, alongside traffic data and road safety outcomes, will help guide future decisions about local street safety.
No decision has been made about whether the speed limit will continue beyond the trial period.
