Earlier this year, the City of Stonnington engaged Hassell Studio to start the process of setting the vision for the future of Chapel Street. After hearing from the community and stakeholders about your vision and priorities for Chapel Street, five draft Vision Statements and neighbourhood identities have been developed. They outline specific objectives and design possibilities to inform preparation of a Master Plan for the future transformation of Chapel Street.

We invite you to review each draft vision statement, related street overview and some design possibilities here.

We want to hear your feedback, ideas, and suggestions on the draft Vision Statements for Chapel Street and its Neighbourhoods and how a Master Plan can support these in coming to life on Chapel Street. Your feedback will help us refine the vision statements and codesign strategies and solutions for implementing the Master Plan.

About the project....

Chapel Street is one of Melbourne’s most iconic destinations – famous for its abundance of vibrant and diverse retail, dining and entertainment offerings.

It’s a highly sought-after address and one of our city’s greatest assets.

However, in recent years the vibrancy enjoyed over the decades has slowly faded, and it’s time to rethink Chapel Street and reimagine what it could be now and into the future.

Transforming Chapel Street is a huge undertaking that will take time and significant investment to realise.

It’s an ambitious and aspirational project that will benefit everyone who lives or works nearby or visits this Stonnington landmark.

We are now at the beginning of the journey of transformation and the first step is to create an overarching vision for the street, from which we will deliver a masterplan – the blueprint for how we’ll transform Chapel Street.

This is the first of many opportunities you will have to be involved in the Chapel Street journey and we will be checking in with you along the way to ensure your voice is heard throughout the masterplan development and delivery.

We've engaged renowned urban planners, Hassell Studio, to start the process of setting the vision for the future of Chapel Street.

Early engagement with stakeholders and outcomes from previous consultation on the Place-led Economic Development Strategy have informed five Vision Statements.

As a major civic spine, Chapel Street traverses the municipality of the City of Stonnington from north to south, connecting into the adjacent municipalities of City of Yarra and City of Port Phillip.

Bookended by its intersections with Alexandra Avenue in the north and Dandenong Road/ Princess Highway in the south, the iconic street crosses some of the major east west arterial roads such as Toorak, Commercial and Malvern, and High Street and is intrinsically interwoven with a fine network of local streets and lanes that make up the network of the Chapel Street activity centre.

The focus of this touchpoint was to introduce the project to key stakeholders and get them to start thinking about their contribution to the project. It focused on fact-finding to inform future engagement and launching the project to the broader community.

For this stage of the project we prepared the Insights and Opportunities paper. This provides a comprehensive mapping and analysis of all data we've gathered to date and provides us with a comprehensive overview of the current state of Chapel Street. This is an opportunity to share your vision for Chapel Street and tell us what you think needs to be done to transform this iconic destination into one of the great streets of the world.
