Zone 1

Existing zone overview

Zone 1 is the western limits of Gardiners Creek / Kooyongkoot – extending upstream from the confluence with the Yarra River / Birrarung to Glenferrie Road.

The zone is characterised by the dominance of engineering infrastructure – notably the Monash Freeway overpass (beneath which the Shared User Path is suspended) and the concrete channelisation of Gardiners Creek / Kooyongkoot.

Proposed concept design

The enhancement of Zone 1 is heavily dependent on advocacy to third parties, including Melbourne Water and VicRoads. The Masterplan Implementation concepts consider opportunities to enhance the user experience of existing infrastructure, as well as touching upon the potential to transform the existing infrastructure beneath the freeway.
