Existing Conditions Overview:

Gardiners Creek Trail and associated key shared user path connections are well-used commuting and recreational trails. This project aims to improve the user experience provide a safer user experience through new widened pathways, use of consistent path materials and installation of signage and wayfinding.

Proposed Concept Design

Key elements of the design concept include:

  • Widening of the existing Shared User Path to between 3m and 4m width
  • Providing a consistent surface profile
  • Installing ecologically sensitive lighting
  • New wayfinding, signage and line-marking / surface treatment
  • Barrier fencing along steep slopes
  • Drainage upgrades
  • Furniture installation including seating, drinking fountains, and maintenance stations
  • Additional maintenance (e.g. tree uplift)

Further detail on lighting and wayfinding is provided in the associated design cycle strategy – hosted on the Connect Stonnington project homepage.

Cat says:

It would be great to have more sections where bicycles are separated from pedestrians. It’s hazardous for bikes to always be darting around

Macca says:

What about the section from the Karnak rd to Warragul road underpass alongside the north side of Gardiners Creek!!! With access to Markham!!

Elaine says:

We need to focus on on-road separated bike paths for commuters. Too much conflict. Wider path loss of biodiversity

Jodie says:

Link Central Park on Burke Rd through to the creek, particularly putting appropriate cross path at Malvern Rd

prodo says:

Path under Tooronga Rd bridge needs attention

prodo says:

Joints between asphalt and concrete (usually at bridges) are bumpy and unpleasant to ride over

17 August, 2024

Kath says:

Need separated cycle and pedestrian path using different coloured surfaces for each, like in the Netherlands, to make each more obvious.

Derek says:

Sharp turns for creek crossings are very dangerous. It may be larger project, but dedicated, straighter cycle paths are required

15 August, 2024

Derek says:

An end to end redesign of the path for more cyclists activity required with ability for family vs high speed riders to co-exist vs peds.

prodo says:

I used to commute to city ~0730, but it became too dangerous. You need to separate pedestrians and riders.

Liz says:

Provide toilets along path. Provide seating with backs & high enough for elderly. Improve garden maintenance, poor compared to Boorondara.

Daniel says:

Agree with other comments. Commuting cyclists and casual walkers each have the right to their own space. Shared paths are too crowded.
