What is community safety?
Community safety is about reducing and preventing crime and creating a community where people feel safe and connected. The safer people feel, the more likely they are to participate fully in community life.
The Plan provides an outline of how we will work together with our partners and the community to address issues that impact community safety.
To guide our approach, we have grouped key community safety elements into four priority areas. In practice, we recognise there is significant overlap in all four areas.
- The draft Community Safety Plan 2023-2026 was developed based on research to identify contemporary, best practice community safety planning approaches.
- Analysis of key data including demographic information, wellbeing data and crime statistics.
- Examination of Council’s current mechanisms for planning and managing community safety including governance structures, partnerships, and processes for determining priorities, developing initiatives and monitoring effectiveness.
- Consideration of known community safety issues in Stonnington, and concerns raised by community through consultation for the development of the Council Plan 2021-25 and Health and Wellbeing Plan 2021-25, and through community safety surveys and Community Safety Committee meetings.
- Interviews, meetings and workshops with Community Safety Committee, advisory committees/forums, service providers, business owners, Victoria Police, and other key stakeholders to identify and confirm local issues, priorities, gaps, and opportunities.
