Stonnington’s LGBTIQA+ community

The City of Stonnington is committed to promoting opportunities for engagement, support, advocacy and partnerships for our LGBTIQA+ community.

In February 2021, Council unanimously passed a Notice of Motion to establish a LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee and develop a LGBTIQA+ Action Plan for the period from 2021-2025.

Stonnington is understood to have one of the largest LGBTIQA+ communities in Victoria, including supporters and allies who help progress equality and fairness for all.

However, LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities often remain relatively hidden within mainstream community settings and, as is the case throughout Victoria and across Australia, there is little data about the demographic profile of LGBTIQA+ communities in Stonnington.

Generally, it is accepted that people of diverse sexual orientations, sex characteristics, and gender identities account for around 11% of the population, while in 2020 the ABS estimated that 8.4 percent of the population identify as non-heterosexual. This means that up to 13,000 or more LGBTIQA+ people may be residing in Stonnington.

As well as an Advisory Committee, Council has an internally focused Pride Network and has supported numerous community groups and programs. This includes support through a community grants program and significant community contributions through support for the Victorian Pride Centre; arts and culture programming through venues such as Chapel off Chapel and participation in annual events such as Pride March. Council also acknowledges key dates in the LGBTIQA+ community calendar each year.

LGBTIQA+ Action Plan 2021-2025

The LGBTIQA+ Action Plan will identify opportunities for Council to work in partnership with local services and groups to increase inclusion, address service gaps and identify opportunities for LGBTIQA+ people and their families to be involved in local community life.

The LGBTIQA+ Action Plan is explicitly linked to the Stonnington Health and Wellbeing Plan 2021-2025 which was released in late 2021.

We invited LGBTIQA+ people who live, work, study or recreate in the City of Stonnington, as well as their families, allies and local service providers to contribute to the development of our Action Plan.

Findings and insights will inform our future work and how we partner with LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities to influence Council policy, strategy and practice.
