Stonnington collaborated with Queer-ways and developed Retracing Stonnington’s Queer Footprints: audio tour, which launched in January 2026.

This audio tour retraces our community's footprints, during which you will be joined by the voices of local LGBTQIA+ individuals, who share stories from their own queer experiences. You can expect to hear moving stories of community, connection, celebration and loss from across the LGBTQIA+ community. The tour features music composed by the Melbourne Rainbow Band.

You can explore the full tour, including the map and tour path, on the City of Stonnington website: Retracing Stonnington's Queer Footprints: audio tour

What we heard

We thank the community for their contributions to the tour, which included identifying significant locations within Stonnington and sharing experiences that shaped the audio tour. Several stories were shared anonymously and privately through the submissions. You can explore the locations identified by the community in the About this project tab.

About the project

To preserve, acknowledge and celebrate Stonnington’s unique LGBTIQA+ history and cultural experience, we are seeking input from LGBTIQA+ community members about places of pride and significance within Stonnington.

The City of Stonnington has a proud history and strong commitment to inclusion, equality and pride in the diversity of LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities.

Stonnington is understood to have one of the largest LGBTIQA+ communities in Victoria, including supporters and allies who help progress equality and fairness for all. Many of the community services, groups and organisations that support and service LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities are also located within or close to Stonnington.

We reached out to the community in May - June 2025 asking for submissions of locations of significance for LGBTIQA+ communities. We appreciate your submissions and have collated a map of significant places.

How you can get involved

We are excited to share that City of Stonnington are collaborating with Queer-ways to create an audio tour featuring the significant locations identified.

We are now asking for community members to share stories specific to the places on our map so we can incorporate community stories into the audio tour. We hope that the map may recall memories or experiences of these significant locations.
