The City of Stonnington has been recognised by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Victoria, with an award for ‘excellence in public works project’ in the $2M to $5M category, for the Greville Street Public Realm Improvement Project.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, welcomed the award saying his reinforces Stonnington’s reputation as a Council that improves our community spaces.

“Greville Street is an iconic part of Melbourne and we’ve delivered these improvement works as part of a suite of works across our Chapel Street precinct,” said Mayor Stefanopoulos.

New features on Greville Street include:

• a plaza at Grattan Gardens with seating, paved areas and flush kerbs to create ‘all ability’ access
• increased footpath width with more seating, dining and lighting, and
• an avenue of tree plantings.

“I’m delighted the works are complete and thank everyone who lives and works in the area for their patience and understanding,” added Mayor Stefanopoulos.

“New shared pedestrian zones at Prahran Railway Station and along Greville Street include trees, furniture and a cobblestone pavement that creates a safer, greener and more active area, and feature overhead catenary lighting at Grattan Gardens has helped develop an amazing space for local events.

“We’re investing in the Chapel Street precinct’s future. The re-construction of the Cato Street car park into a contemporary public square is progressing well and is scheduled to be completed in 2019, this will complement these works on Greville Street,” said Mayor Stefanopoulos.

Designs for improvement streetscape works on the permanently closed section of nearby King Street are underway and Council will contact local users when these are nearing completion.

IPWEA awards recognise excellence in innovation, development, construction and/or management in public works.

The award was presented to the City of Stonnington at the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards in Melbourne in May.

The category acknowledges excellence in design, and/or construction of a significant public works infrastructure project that greatly benefits the community.

The project illustrates Greville Street as one of Stonnington’s iconic destinations. It features a combination of infrastructure, urban design and landscape improvements, and follows three main objectives to provide more greenery, increase public safety and amenity, and reduce congestion.

The objectives were incorporated into the street improvements through modifying traffic flow, replacing some car parks with trees and outdoor dining spaces, implementing shared pedestrian zones at key locations, widening footpaths and installing new street lighting.
