We are upgrading the playground at Brookville Gardens at Canterbury Road in Toorak. The playground was last upgraded in 2000, and the timber play equipment is now ageing and deteriorating and needs to be replaced.

Brookville Gardens has two playgrounds. This consultation is about the playground next to the picnic shelter. The playground next to the cricket nets was upgraded in 2016 and will stay the same.

We have listened to ideas and suggestions from the local community and used them to help shape a draft design for the new space. We are now sharing that draft design and would like your feedback before it is finalised.

Draft playground design

We've developed a draft concept design for the playground. Take a look at the proposed new play equipment in the images and plan below.

New features

In the new playground, we're proposing a range of play and movement features for children aged 2 to 10, including:

  • tunnel and double slides
  • netted cube and net bridges
  • monkey bars
  • refreshed play towers with shaded roofs and climbing elements
  • spider web net
  • a shop front cubby for imaginative play
  • new shade sail over the playground

We're also proposing to:

  • add a new accessible path through the playground
  • replace the existing high brick wall with a lower chain-link fence to improve sightlines and visibility around the playground
  • plant a new tree to increase canopy around the playground

Our aim is to build a playground that meets the needs of children and families, improves accessibility and offers a range of play experiences. You can share your views on:

  • whether the proposed features meet the needs of the community
  • any specific equipment preferences within the proposed design

Due to timeframes and safety requirements:

  • the location of the playground, which will remain in its current position
  • water and sand play, which cannot be accommodated due to the size of the playground and maintenance requirements
  • the existing facilities in the park including public toilets, BBQ area, seat mound, picnic tables, drinking fountain, picnic shelter and lighting, which were all upgraded in 2023 and are not part of this project
  • off-leash dog infrastructure, which is out of scope for this playground upgrade
  • the playground next to the cricket nets, which was upgraded in 2016 and will stay the same

Feedback from this consultation will be reviewed by the project team and used to finalise the playground design. A summary of what we heard will be published on this page once the consultation has closed.

What happens next

We will use your feedback to finalise the playground design. We will share the final design with the community before construction begins in the 2027-28 financial year.
