Cheel Street design

The Cheel Street design proposes a tree-lined avenue that improves the experience of walking along the street, supports healthy tree growth and strengthens the green connection along the rail corridor.

On the north side, trees that are not performing well will be replaced with new canopy trees planted in the parking lane, allowing footpaths to widen. Some parking will be reduced to make room for new trees, resulting in 31 parking spaces. On the south side, declining (Fraxinus) trees growing under overhead wires will be replaced with smaller canopy species, with extended garden beds added while retaining 21 parking spaces. New pocket parks at each end of the street will create welcoming arrival points with distinctive planting, seating and lighting.

Key changes

  • New tree planting
  • Two new pocket parks at each end of the street
  • New wayfinding and lighting

Key considerations

  • Reduction in parking and changes to traffic conditions

Why is parking being reduced on Cheel Street? The parking reduction is guided by Council's One Mile Grid traffic study, which recommends a ratio of one tree for every two parking spaces to support healthy canopy growth along the street. The result is 31 parking spaces, with 85% of the street dedicated to parking and 15% to tree planting.
