A circular economy approach to waste management
The City of Stonnington is taking a circular economy approach to waste management through its first standalone Waste Strategy - Towards a circular economy, Our Future Waste Strategy (2022-25).
Adopted at the 12 September 2022 Council meeting, the Our Future Waste Strategy was shaped by community feedback on a draft strategy prepared in early-2022.
Following a comprehensive community engagement program in April and May 2022 the draft was refined ahead of presenting for Council adoption in September.
The Our Future Waste Strategy is a three-year plan to shape our transition to a circular approach to waste management.

Council's adoption of the Waste Strategy brings to a close this consultation. Thank you to everyone who gave feedback on the draft and helped shape the Towards a circular economy, Our Future Waste Strategy.
About the Waste Strategy
The Strategy identifies three key priorities:
- avoid and reduce waste
- reuse for as long as possible, and
- recover and make waste history.
Underpinning the key priorities are a set of actions that will move our city towards a circular economy approach to waste management:
- implement Recycling Victoria reforms
- increase the recovery of food and green waste
- futureproof waste services and infrastructure
- manage residual waste
- wmpower our community
- drive Council policy reform
- advocate to federal and state governments
- transition to a circular economy
Realising the actions in Our Future Waste Strategy (2022–2025) will help create a stronger, healthier, more connected and resilient city and support our climate emergency response.
Over the next three years we’ll be rolling out improvements to our waste services, empower our community and move our city towards a circular economy.
