We have an existing Heritage Policy that provides guidance on how development should be sympathetic to the existing heritage character. We also have a Heritage Strategy and Action Plan that directs future investigations into the preservation of more of our built environment.

Our challenge is to ensure that unprotected places identified to be of local or state heritage significance can be preserved until protected in the planning scheme.

Our planning scheme addresses topics such as:

  • Indigenous heritage
  • Limiting development height to reduce heritage impacts
  • Protecting heritage

Since our last review we have completed and submitted Amendment C304 (compilation heritage amendment) that seeks to protect additional heritage places and precincts.

We have also endorsed the Stonnington Heritage Review, a comprehensive suburb by suburb review of heritage in Stonnington. To this end we have:

  • adopted the Stonnington Heritage review Part 1 (Malvern), undertaken a public exhibition, and progressed the amendment process to an independent planning panel (Aug 2022)
  • adopted the Stonnington Heritage Review Part 2, (Toorak, Kooyong, Armadale) and submitted the proposed amendment to the Minister for Planning for authorisation to commence the amendment process.
  • commenced Part 3 of the review (Prahran and Windsor) which is due to be completed in early 2023.

We will begin to roll out parts 4 and 5 of the review in 2023/24.
