The City of Stonnington is planning to update and upgrade the Prahran Aquatic Centre and surrounds.
Since opening in 1963, this much-loved community facility has been a popular swimming spot and meeting place for Stonnington locals.
Although refurbished in the 1990s, at over 50 years of age, the condition of the centre is deteriorating and many of its facilities do not meet contemporary standards of design, service or access.
With Council endorsement we are looking to create an aquatic centre that is equipped to serve the community well - now and into the future. A centre that:
- is inviting for all (maximising participation)
- has contemporary facilities
- is a place for the community
- accommodates existing users
- is accessible
- enhances the broader precinct, and
- is sustainable
To achieve this, Council recently endorsed a preferred redevelopment option for community consultation. If supported, the preferred plan will deliver:
- an upgrade to the existing 50-metre pool
- new indoor facilities - warm water pool, sauna, spa, steam room, children’s pool, gymnasium and dry program areas
- high-quality change rooms
- contemporary design
- improved accessibility
- places to meet - café, seating and shaded areas
- green space
- new entry at the central Princes Gardens pathway
- efficient and environmentally friendly plant, equipment and lighting.
Prahran Skate Park
If the preferred Prahran Aquatic Centre plan is adopted, the Prahran Skatepark will need to relocate, and land has been purchased nearby for this purpose. Coinciding with the Prahran Aquatic Centre consultation we are also asking the community about the new skatepark - what it should look like and what features it should include.
