Council has now made a decision regarding several proposed car share parking spaces in your local area (locations outlined in the document library) as outlined below.
The proposals follow an application from car share operators (received and assessed in line with the city's Car Share Policy). Council asked for community feedback before making the decision.
What is car share?
Car share is a service that provides personal or business access to a fleet of cars parked on or off-street for members. Car share is a great alternative to personal car ownership for many. Vehicles can be rented by the hour or day. Well-developed car share networks can reduce parking demand in the local area, reduce car dependency and encourage walking, cycling and public transport use.
Council supports expanding the local car share network and welcomes suitable applications from eligible operators. Operators are required to demonstrate demand for car share services in the area, as part of their application.
Council aims for cost-neutrality in managing car share and supports it to provide a service to the community rather than to raise revenue.
All car share bays are closely monitored and evaluated from 12 months after installation to ensure they receive sufficient ongoing usage to justify the kerbside space required.
Decisions on Car Share parking spaces

Community feedback noted that Metro Tunnel works had impacted local parking availability and that this proposal would further limit what parking was left. There was otherwise support for car share and demonstrated local demand from the car share operator. Council successfully negotiated with Rail Network Alliance, who are responsible for building the Metro Tunnel, for the reinstatement of up to 14 on-street spaces now that Metro Tunnel works have been completed. As part of reinstatement one car space will be used for car share on Bond Street close to Chambers Street. Parking will only be permitted in the car share spot for a car share vehicle from GoGet and will otherwise be signed NO STOPPING.
There was majority community support from those we heard from including from several residents of the adjacent apartment building who are prospective or existing car share members. Other community feedback noted the high demand for parking in the area. The car share operator demonstrated local demand and Council noted that Bray Street was the best suited location in the area in terms of surrounding land uses and ease of vehicular access. A car share space will be installed in this location and parking will only be permitted in the car share spot for a car share vehicle from GoGet and will otherwise be signed NO STOPPING.
Whilst this location was considered highly suitable for car share there was little support from existing and prospective members, and the new car share bays approved in Bond Street and Bray Street are within a walkable distance. No car share parking space will therefore be installed.
There was majority community support from those we heard from including from several current car share members who noted they were more likely to use the service if this location was installed. Feedback not in support related to the high level of parking demand in this area and specific issues relating to requests for linemarking of parking spaces, and for accessible parking for the adjacent medical centre. Officers note that due to the physical constraints of the street that compliant accessible parking spaces are not possible and that linemarking of parking bays would result in fewer parking spaces (parking bays have to be marked up to the length of the largest vehicles on the market rather than the vehicle actually being parked). A car share space will be installed in this location and parking will only be permitted in the car share spot for a car share vehicle from GoGet and will otherwise be signed NO STOPPING.
Feedback from those in support noted that this car share bay would be more accessible for them and that they would use car share more. Other feedback noted that there was high demand for parking in the street. Council Officers note that a ‘floating’ car share bay (using unrestricted parking areas) has been operating successfully in Trinian Street for nearly two years and so a dedicated bay would not take up any additional parking area. Council’s Car Share Policy encourages operators to transition floating bays to dedicated bays as has been proposed here to provide a higher degree of certainty for residents and users regarding the location of the car share vehicle. In response to feedback, Officers also attempted to identify an alternative location for this car share bay within 400m of the proposed location, however due to widespread resident-supported street cleaning restrictions which do not allow parking for one hour per week there are no suitable alternatives. A car share space will therefore be installed in the 2-HOUR parking space on the east side of Trinian Street which will allows car share users to immediately exit the street.
